Cannes Lions

I had the opportunity to collaborate on the UX design for an AR app that lived inside the official 2018 Cannes Lions app, a fun, different experience for festival visitors across the venues.

The experience included trying on virtual accessories at a fashion museum, immersive portals, AR photo filters, mini games, and even the experience of being inside a yacht. Festival-goers could access the full event schedule and move around the area guided by a custom pathfinder and, at points, a mascot accompanying the journey.

OVERVIEW

The Cannes Lions festival wanted something immersive and very different, built on 3D and augmented reality.

APPROACH

UX and wireframing, shaped by daily collaboration with a technical director and Unity AR teams across Europe and the US.

I worked on UX and wireframing while taking the technical boundaries of the experience into account, through day-to-day communication with a director based in London and the Unity Augmented Reality team split across Europe and the US. It was a fun project and a real challenge through iterations, we figured out how to translate the full range of creative offerings into a seamless, enjoyable experience on a mobile phone.
We also worked through technical scenarios that could impact the experience, like low-tech device compatibility and weak internet signal, mapping those possibilities directly into the design.

CONTRIBUTION

15 AR experiences across the site; geo-located and persistent, day and night, with journeys, overlays, and graceful error states.

The experience included 15 AR events total around the site, some geo-located and others persistent, designed to account for day and night conditions across a variety of formats, and integrated with push notifications. The UX also covered location sharing, guided journeys, instructional overlays, and polite error messaging for the edge cases the team had mapped, ensuring the experience held up even when conditions weren't ideal.

OUTCOME

Didn't go to France, but the experience of collaborating with an agency like Unit9 was great.

As part of Starshot/Starloop Studios, working alongside the Unit9 team, with Anrick Bregman as Technical Director.
